The ninety-four year old former South African president was admitted to a clinic early on Saturday, where he is thought to be suffering a lung infection. He’s been visited by his ex-wife Winnie and their daughter Zindzi.
Jackson Mthembu, spokesman for the ANC said: “When people are in a serious but stable condition, you don’t visit them. You allow the health professionals to take care of them. So we had no intention of visiting Madiba.”
Affectionately known by his clan name “Madiba”, Mandela’s history of lung problems stems from a near thirty-year prison sentence on Robben Island under South Africa’s apartheid regime.
News of his declining health has brought a constant stream of well-wishers to his home, many leaving gifts, flowers and notes for a speedy recovery.
